Day Ol Pejeta Excursion from Nairobi
The Big Five Plus Chimpanzees -Explore one of Kenya’s best kept conservation havens
Ol Pejeta is a home to only 3 of the world’s last remaining northern white rhinos; also a sanctuary to critically endangered 105 black rhinos. This Conservancy has employed highly trained rhino protection guards. And they also have partnered with international veterinary experts to ensure the survival of these endangered animals.
Starting from/returning to your Nairobi area hotel, private residence or the airport. We’ll pick you up at 5:00 am for a full-day safari in the comfort of a standard pop-top safari 4 jeep.
Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a private wildlife reserve that has so many wonderful features you won’t want to leave! Just a few hours from Nairobi you can find all the big five – lion, buffalo, elephant, leopard and rhino. But what makes Ol Pejeta even more exciting is this reserve features the highest density of predators in Kenya.
You’ll have a very good chance of seeing lion, cheetah, hyena and the rare African wild dog. And a guarantee you’ll see rhinos and chimpanzees in the famous animal sanctuaries hosted in this 365 sq.km (141 sq.mi) reserve.
Formerly a cattle ranch, Ol Pejeta now serves as a protected space for many species including rare black and white rhinos and rescued chimpanzees. You’ll also find a long list of not-so-common African wildlife like the aardvark and bat-eared fox in this amazing park.
Tour Itinerary
Natural World Kenya Safaris will pick you up at your hotel or location of choice at 5:00 am to begin our eventful day. On the way to Ol Pejeta, we’ll point out traditional Kenya coffee and tea plantations. Weather permitting, you’ll also enjoy views of Mt. Kenya and its snow-capped summit.
The drive is relatively short, only 3 – 4 hours. It’s the closest place to Nairobi where you’ll be able to view all of Africa’s Big Five. The reserve is home to six prides of lions, close to 80 in all, plus about 30 cheetahs.
You’ll have opportunities to spot many typical East Africa wildlife like giraffe, vervet monkey, baboon, hippo, impala, gazelle, dik-dik and zebra.
The Rhino Sanctuary
Ol Pejeta is known for its heroic efforts at saving endangered and threatened wildlife. The rhino sanctuary here hosts 100 black rhinos, the largest protected population in East Africa. Also, of note, the last two northern white rhinos left in the world live in this protected enclave.
This special enclosure is open to visitors twice a day, at 8:30 hrs. and at 16:00 hrs (Not possible to visit the Northern White Rhinos while on a day trip)
Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary
This is the only place in Kenya where you’ll be able to enjoy these loving and intelligent creatures. Here at the sanctuary, orphaned and abandoned chimps are rescued and nursed back to health.
When they’ve been rehabilitated, the chimps are introduced to large natural enclosures where they can live and play freely.
More to Do and See at Ol Pejeta
Adding to the diversity of this special sanctuary you’ll also find some little-seen, unique wildlife such as the tree hyrax, white-tailed mongoose, black-fronted duiker, mole rat, bushbuck, waterbuck and eland.
And all of this under the shadow of great Mt. Kenya, towering over the park.
If you wish, you can also visit a local Masai Village. See and experience up close Masai culture, cattle raising and the creation of their bright fabrics and jewelry. Your guide will be happy to arrange this visit for an optional fee.
